Can I do this myself?
The installation process is different for each car, and while some are relatively easy for the average DIY owner, others require some special tools and basic understanding of cam timing and TDC (Top Dead Center). We provide specialized documentation for the single and dual vanos installation as well as tool rental. Both of these engines are very straight forward to work on and the installation can be done by the average DIY owner.
The Euro E36 M3, E39 M5 and E46 M3 vanos units are somewhat more difficult to install and may require specialized tools. A professional BMW tech who is familiar with the vanos removal/installation process is recommended for the procedure.
For model specific information select your vanos below
Stage I - The Stage I kit does not require that the cam gears or timing chain be removed, which makes the installation just a matter of swapping the vanos unit out. The cam blocks and TDC pin are still needed to hold everything in place while changing the vanos.
Stage II - The Stage II kit does require that the cam gears and chain be removed, which adds a little bit of work and the need to install the new cam gears correctly.
The single vanos documentation covers the Stage I or Stage II procedures in detail and can be downloaded from the left sidebar.
The Dual Vanos installation (E46, E39 6-cylinder) is also a very basic procedure that can be done by the average mechanic, and is not any more difficult than the Stage I single vanos installation. The cam gears and timing chains do not need to be removed, so there is no possibility of accidentally affecting the cam timing, and the BMW tools are not needed for the dual vanos installation.
The Dual Vanos documentation covers the procedure in detail and can be downloaded from the left sidebar.
